Architecture - Mentoring

"Mentoring : A relationship in which a more experienced colleague uses their greater knowledge and understanding to support the development of a more junior or inexperienced member of staff; the long term passing-on of support, guidance and advice."

  • The cynical would say that "mentoring" is just a modern management buzzword to describe the traditional process of disseminating knowledge within the professions, and they're probably correct.
  • Mentoring has now become a formal procedure within many large architectural practices, and generally still happens by default in the smallest offices, but experienced staff in medium size offices rarely have the time to provide adequate assistance to junior staff.
  • I can provide external mentoring support to junior staff - someone who they can contact for basic advice and guidance on straightforward issues without disturbing the senior staff within your office. I can direct them to the appropriate information source, provide specific advice, or give them the confidence to tackle the issue themselves.
