It may seem strange to provide links to websites that I haven't designed but I have found that potential clients are rarely able to articulate their personal likes and dislikes without direct reference to actual sites.
Exceptional sites
These are all, in my opinion, exceptional examples of their type and, more particularly, sites whose general style can be replicated without too much difficulty.
- www.brompton.co.uk : A really excellent site with a huge amount of detailed information clearly presented in an incredibly simple design which uses colour-coding to emphasise the top level navigation. A restrained use of high-quality photographic images adds visual interest to text-heavy pages.
- www.fosterandpartners.com : An absolute tour-de-force from the UK's greatest living architect. The "information architecture" of the site handles the complexity, depth, and shear quantity of information seamlessly - and the simple navigation system means that you never lose track of where you are within the site. A clearer design, in my opinion, than most architectural sites with a fraction of the content.
Individual sites
Good examples of their type, in my personal opinion.

Portfolio sites
These provide a wider range of examples for general reference.
- www.squareeye.com : Square Eye are the designers of the Brompton site (see above). Personally, I find some of their other designs a bit too "busy" but their site does provide some nicely-displayed examples.
- www.webdesignfromscratch.com : I really like Ben Hunt's web design from scratch website and, although I may not agree that these are the "10 best designed websites in the world", or that these are "typical of today's best design", they certainly make an inspiring selection. There are also some more nice examples on this page.
